abd + tommy smythe
Abd’s first fashion retail project is now open at 1116 Yonge Street, Toronto. It’s been an incredible journey on so many levels. Not only is this the first standalone store for the wildly successful Smythe brand, but it has also brought together four friends who have known each other since we were teenagers.
Last year, I joined forces with interior designer Tommy Smythe (TOM Interior Design Studio) to realize the new storefront co-owned by his sister Christie and business partner Andrea Lenczner. The chance to work together was a bit of a dream. It reminded me that great design comes out of great collaborations. In fact, sharing ideas is one of the things I love most about what I do.
Among the biggest takeaways was what we learned from each other, as professionals each running our businesses. Tommy’s knowledge of design history is beyond. It’s impressive to hear him talk about what he’s passionate about with such ease. We also discovered we’re detail interrogators – we’re obsessed with making sure everything is carefully considered, so we’re not distracted by the little things. We doubled up on the details with the Smythe interior… and enjoyed every minute of it.
Collaboration doesn’t always work out this way. But, when it does, it’s the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you, Tommy, Andrea, and Christie, for an excellent ride.
